Tips on How to Choose Your Wedding Photographer. Advice from the professionals, Roger and Holly, of Roger Mahler Photography

With so many wedding photographers out there it can be difficult making this decision that can have great consequences. You spend so much time planning all the details of your wedding and it is vital to have beautiful pictures to cherish after it is all over. We have heard too many bad stories about people being disappointed with their wedding photographs and we do not want that happening to you. Here we will share with you our top tips that we hope will help you make your decision.

Tip # 1: Connect with your wedding photographer
We believe that this is so important that we have put it as our number one tip. If you do not “click” with your photographer it will show in the photos because you will not be comfortable, relaxed and natural. Wedding photography involves constant interaction between the wedding couple, bridal party, guests and the photographer, so it is in your best interests to choose a photographer whose personality is compatible with your personality. You do not want to have a photographer you find irritating, annoying, or offensive spending all day with you on your wedding day.

It is also really important that you feel comfortable enough with your wedding photographer to communicate openly with him or her. We would hate it if an important photograph was missed because a client was too shy to ask for it to be done. You should also ask your potential wedding photographer how they work. Are they flexible to go with the flow of the day? How will they dress on the wedding day? Do they work quickly? How are they with children?

Tip # 2: Ask to see complete wedding albums
You’ve found a photographer whose style “speaks” to you but can he or she capture the entire wedding day with beautiful images? When you meet with a prospective photographer to view his or her work ask to see a complete wedding album (or two or three!) that tells the entire story of a couple’s wedding day from start to finish. If a photographer only shows you a few pictures of a particular wedding ask them why they don’t have a complete album for you to see.

Tip # 3: Make sure the wedding photographer you originally met with will be the same photographer who will be taking pictures on your wedding day
Some wedding photography studios have several photographers working for them. You do not want to be surprised on your wedding day by a photographer arriving that you didn’t expect especially after you’ve taken the care to find someone that was just right for you. In your initial meeting you will also want to be sure you view samples of the actual photographer who will be assigned to your wedding, so be sure to ask whether that is the case.
